5 Essential Garden Tools For Every Beginner

1/22/2017

As an industrious homeowner, the healthiest outdoor activity you can ever choose to do this spring and summer is none other but gardening. Apart from providing you with a tableful of herbs and edible vegetables, this exciting and fun activity also brings about plenty of sunshine (vitamin D), fresh air, and moderate exercise.

However, it is important to understand that gardening can be the most difficult task in life especially if you’ve got the wrong or inadequate tools. In order to avoid some backyard nuisances, like scratched hands and strained back muscles, there are certain things (right tools) you need to have at hand.
From compression gloves to stand-up weeders, here are 5 essential garden tools every potential gardener should have.

1. Gloves
Without the right pair of gloves, your gardening activity can quickly turn from being a wonderful hobby to a thorny and splintery hassle. Gardening gloves come as a padded protective covering needed to protect your hand from dust, injury, chemical and other unwanted hazards. Ensure to buy gloves that are compact (not bulky) and durable. During storage, ensure to protect them from insects, water, and too much sun.

2. Spade
A spade is a digging tool with wide shallow blade flattened where it meets the shaft so it can be pushed into the ground with the foot. If your gardening activity requires digging holes and transporting small mounds of soil and dirt around, then you will need this short-handled square shovel to make the work easier. If you are looking to have a durable spade that will last you the rest of your gardening life, then go for the one with a thick fiberglass handle and a strong steel head.

3. Hand Trowel
When it comes to purchasing hand trowel, it is good to go for one that is durable. If your budget will permit you, it is best you purchase a trowel with a stainless steel head or one that is forged from stainless steel. Apart from their usefulness in planting herbs, trowels are great for taking out weeds and digging around corners.

4. Hoe
This weeding tool consists of a long pole and a small flat metal blade commonly used for turning over soil. There are different types of hoe on the market. The type of garden you cultivate will determine the type of hoe you need. While a tiny hoe with a delicate touch will be suitable for perennial gardens, a sturdier, wide hoe is more preferred for a veggie garden.

5. Rake
Rake is an essential garden tool used to whisk away fallen leaves and debris. With this sturdy inexpensive, long-handled toothed gardening tool, you will never be disappointed with the cleanliness and beauty of your garden.
