Buying land and building a house on it that I would one day call my home had always been a dream of mine since university. Even to this day; this house will always be something I am proud of. Allow me to share my journey of how I managed to build the home that I now live in today.
Buying the Land
When purchasing land, you should always look at how much you could potentially get out of the property when you decide to sell it. This was one of the biggest criteria that I factored in when I was looking for land to build my home on. The area that I finally settled on is a gated community that is just a few kilometers away from a lush and expensive neighborhood so I think I got a good deal for the land.
Designing the House
Once I had finished paying for the land, I had to approach an architect to design the house that I had in mind. I had grown up in homes that were completely made out of brick, and while brick affords many benefits such as retains heat in winter and brings about a cool effect in summer, I knew that I wanted a house that combined brick and glass. I didn’t want a complete glass house as the heating costs would make the house unsustainable and difficult to sell in the future, so I settled on a double line brick home, with massive expansive glass windows for the living and dining room.
Furnishing the House
It took a few years for the house to be completed, but once it was done, it was time to move in! The day I walked into the finished house I felt like I had come home. All the planning and dreaming had led to this moment. The home was everything and more of what I had envisioned that it would be. I was more than happy, I was elated.
Furnishing the house was the next exciting phase of life. I never knew how tricky home furnishing can be until I was stuck trying to choose between leather black sofas or standard brown sofas for my living room couches. I knew that whatever colors I chose were going to be there for a few years to come, so I didn’t want to make any mistakes!
Thank goodness I had help with the gadgets because I didn’t have a clue as to how to mount the TV on the wall. It was a new experience and one that was turning this recently finished house into a home.
Conclusion
The entire process took almost five years, but these were five years well invested. Today I can walk into a house that I call my home, a house that I know I built through hard work and my sweat. This is a place that I can call my own. It is true that home is where the heart is. My heart is in this home. I never felt I was home until I stepped into my finished house.
