The backyard is the place where most family activities happen. This is the place where children are free to romp and frolic. Pets get into the act too. The backyard is where adults get to play like children at least for a little while. Sometimes there’s a swimming pool and an outdoor kitchen...
It is more important than ever that you spend time with you kids in the backyard. Kids stay inside too much and do not exercise enough. The same goes for adults. Playing in the backyard keeps you and your kids happy and healthy.
These are a few of the many simple things that you can do in your backyard to have more fun. Some of these require money and some construction work and some are free. Get your kids involved in the building to teach them skills.
1) Do the dirt
Boys may like this more but girls like dirt too. The idea is simple. Build a pile of dirt in the backyard for your kids to play in. The basis for this is that your children get to use their imagination and creativity. You need to pick the right dirt and the right place. Do not use dirt that has a lot of sharp rocks that can hurt children. Consult with your wife as to placement of the dirt. Use enough dirt to make an area large enough for all of your kids and their friends to play in. Dress your children in old clothes when they do the dirt. Tell the parents of your children’s friends that they will be playing in dirt.
2) Hiding place
Children like a hiding place. They like to use their imagination to create a separate world in their hiding place. This idea needs a large to medium sized tree in your backyard.
Cut old sheets, old clothes, or anything cloth into three to six inch strips. Attach the strips of cloth to the lower limbs of the tree with staples of twist ties. The strips of cloth should be close enough to each other to cover a small area. The design lets your kids be private but lets you keep an eye on them whenever the wind blows. The construction can be taken down for winter. Animals will have a tendency to attack the cloth strips. The kids will love this.
3) A portable pond
This only required a large plant saucer. A plant saucer is the ceramic or plastic bowl that you put under plants to keep water from coming out on the floor or concrete. The selection of the spot is critical for maximum enjoyment. You need a location that has some shade for at least part of the day. The idea is to prevent your children from getting too much sun. You can secure the saucer in the ground or leave it free to move if it is not too large.
All you have to do is fill the plant saucer with water. The dish makes a great pond for sailing or driving toy trucks through. You may even make a home for a frog or a toad if these creatures live around your home.
These simple little ideas make the backyard more fun for children and get them active in their body and mind.
