The Top 5 Things I Love About My Backyard

2/20/2017

It’s taken a few years for me to finally have the backyard of my dreams. Every stone in the backyard, every flower in my home, every detail was planned before I even bought the house I am currently staying in. My garden is the epitome of exterior design and though I am not a professional landscape designer, I have an eye for beauty.

Here are the 5 things in my backyard that make it special:

Water Fountain

Bubbling ever so gently is a water feature that was set up as one of the very first attractions in my backyard. The feature takes its cue from the Chinese philosophy of Fang Chui and so is positioned strategically in the center of my backyard, complementing the area very nicely. The pump isn’t loud at all, I made sure of this because I love to sit and meditate in my backyard and hear the birds chirp happily in the trees around me.

Swing Set

The beams and trusses of my house are not strong enough to support a porch swing, so I opted to have a swing set installed a little further into the garden overlooking the water feature. The wooden swing set is lined with pin cushions which add to the comfort and softness of the swing. It is the perfect place to catch up with my husband after a busy day at work or one of my children if I want to spend quality time with them.

Designated Pathways

One thing about my backyard that a lot of people often comment on is the way I have been able to do a lot with such an average sized backyard. I never wanted my backyard to be haphazard so I deliberately set out to create pathways complete with lamps to light the way. In the evenings walking on these pathways gives a sort of mystical feel and makes you almost believe you are in a totally different world.

Vegetable Patch

I am a firm believer in growing your own food and living an organic lifestyle. Perhaps this is a trait that I inherited from my mother and grandmother who both kept large and extensive gardens. Within my vegetable patch, I seasonally grow tomatoes, onions, lettuce, cabbage, onions and herbs such as thyme, mint, and parsley. I am yet to master the art of potato farming but I hear that it isn’t as difficult as I perceive it to be.

Fire Pit

This is the most loved and favorite part of my backyard. The fire pit is the one place we all gather together as a family when the weather is just right. The pit is a circular built-up area with a depression in the center where the firewood is stacked to make a good bon fire. Nothing beats roasting marshmallows and dipping them in hot chocolate with friends and family over the weekend. Stories have been shared around this fire pit and special memories created. It truly is one of the most special parts of my backyard. I wouldn’t exchange the fire pit for anything.

These are a few things I absolutely love about my backyard!
